Solar and Stellar Coronae

چکیده

The existence of hot coronae throughout the HR diagram has been proved by the observations of the Einstein observatory since the late 1970's This nding has stimulated a new interest in the study of stellar activity. The general picture relating stellar activity in late type stars to the internal generation, photospheric emergence, and chromospheric and coronal dissipation of magnetic elds, was connrmed by the X-ray observations; in addition, the large range in X-ray luminosity for stars of the same spectral class and luminosity type, related to their range in age, has shown that X-ray observations add new leverage to the study of stellar physics. In this paper, after a brief overview of stellar coronae, I shall discuss how observations can be used to get insight on their structure.

A Physical Mechanism for Self-Organization in Solar and Stellar Coronae: Theory and Observations

The existence of power law statistics in solar and stellar flares has prompted the suggestion that solar and stellar coronae are in a self-organized critical state, but the physical foundation of this theory is lacking. We present observational evidence from 107 flare events in 37 sun-like stars that solar and stellar coronae self-organize into a critical state set by a bifurcation in the dynam...

Stellar activity and coronal heating: an overview of recent results.

Observations of the coronae of the Sun and of solar-like stars provide complementary information to advance our understanding of stellar magnetic activity, and of the processes leading to the heating of their outer atmospheres. While solar observations allow us to study the corona at high spatial and temporal resolution, the study of stellar coronae allows us to probe stellar activity over a wi...

Coronal activity with XMM-Newton and Chandra

XMM-Newton and Chandra have greatly deepened our knowledge of stellar coronae giving access to a variety of new diagnostics such that nowadays a review of stellar X-ray astronomy necessarily must focus on a few selected topics. Attempting to provide a limited but representative overview of recent discoveries I discuss three subjects: the solar-stellar connection, the nature of coronae in limiti...

From Solar and Stellar Flares to Coronal Heating: Theory and Observations of How Magnetic Reconnection Regulates Coronal Conditions

There is currently no explanation of why the corona has the temperature and density it has. We present a model which explains how the dynamics of magnetic reconnection regulates the conditions in the corona. A bifurcation in magnetic reconnection at a critical state enforces an upper bound on the coronal temperature for a given density. We present observational evidence from 107 flares in 37 su...

Viewing the Sun as an X-ray Star

The Sun is the late-type star we can study with the highest level of detail. In the interpretation of stellar data, therefore, it is often assumed that the physical processes of the coronae of late-type stars are similar to those of the solar corona, i.e. the “solar-stellar analogy”. In order to investigate the validity of this assumption, we have started a program to study systematically the S...
